Genèse: Background Green Day released the concept album American Idiot in 2004. According to lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong, the album was deliberately created with a plot arc and that some of their inspiration was from sources in the musical theater repertoire like The Rocky Horror Show and West Side Story. Armstrong also said the band intended "that it would be staged or we'd create a film or something… we were thinking in terms that it kind of felt like scoring a movie." Director Michael Mayer heard the album and expressed an interest in adapting it for the stage. When he approached the band about a collaboration, they agreed to work with him. The band also gave Mayer wide latitude for his adaptation after seeing the director's earlier work with Spring Awakening. Though additional songs were included from the Green Day catalog, Mayer added very little dialogue to the show. He felt instead that the music and lyrics were expressive enough on their own, and even removed some of the dialogue that was part of the Berkeley production before the show moved to Broadway. Berkeley tryout The musical premiered at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre. Previews began on September 4, 2009 and the official opening was on September 15, 2009. After becoming the top-grossing show in Berkeley Rep history, the producers extended the limited run twice to November 15, 2009. The cast included John Gallagher Jr. As Johnny, Matt Caplan as Tunny, Michael Esper as Will, Tony Vincent as St. Jimmy, Rebecca Naomi Jones as Whatsername, Mary Faber as Heather, and Christina Sajous as the Extraordinary Girl. Broadway The musical transferred to Broadway at the St. James Theatre with previews beginning on March 24, 2010 and officially opened on April 20, 2010. It is rumored that the show cost between $8 million and $10 million to produce. After six months of performances, the show was "still a ways off from possibly turning a profit" according to a New York Times report. The original Broadway cast included John Gallagher Jr. As Johnny, Michael Esper as Will, Stark Sands as Tunny, Tony Vincent as St. Jimmy, Rebecca Naomi Jones as Whatsername, Mary Faber as Heather, and Christina Sajous as the Extraordinary Girl. Tom Kitt is the music supervisor and orchestrator for both the Berkeley and Broadway productions. The lead producers for the show are Ira Pittelman and Tom Hulce. The creative team for the show is largely the same as for the musical adaptation of Spring Awakening: Michael Mayer, director, Christine Jones, scenic designer, and Kevin Adams, lighting designer. Andrea Lauer is the costume designer. Brian Ronan is the Sound Designer. On September 26, 2010, Billie Joe Armstrong wrote on the official Green Day Twitter account that from September 28 to October 3 he would play the role of St. Jimmy. The announcement led to an immediate increase in sales of tickets at the St. James Theatre. Ticket sales for the week Armstrong performed were up 77%, average ticket prices increased 22%, and gross sales increased 127% from the previous week's totals. The singer-songwriter filled in for cast member Tony Vincent who took time off for personal matters; the following week after Armstrong's run, St. Jimmy's understudies, Andrew Call and Joshua Kobak, split covering the role. On November 30, 2010, the producers announced that Armstrong would make another 50 appearances as St. Jimmy between January 1 and February 27, 2011. Armstrong's Broadway performances were among of a number of personal appearances he has made to help promote the show. As part of the promotion for the show, the cast performed at the Grammy Awards on January 31, 2010 with Green Day. In addition to Billie Joe Armstrong's stint as St. Jimmy, Melissa Etheridge played the part of St. Jimmy on Broadway from February 1–6, 2011, and Davey Havok took the role from March 1-15, 2011. In the wake of weak sales following the departure of Billie Joe Armstrong from the role of St. Jimmy, The New York Times hinted that the producers could soon post a closing notice for the production.[27] The Broadway production was then scheduled to close on April 24, 2011 after 27 previews and 421 performances. Billie Joe Armstrong returned to the role of St. Jimmy for the final three weeks.[28]

Résumé: Johnny, Will and Tunny long to escape their unhappy, media-saturated suburban lives, but pregnancy, drugs and the military keep them from pursuing the lives they are destined to lead.

Commentaires longs: At the time, it was the highest-grossing show in Berkeley Rep Theatre history.
Presse : “American Idiot is that rare creature, a true rock opera…directed with polish and precision by Michael Mayer, on a spectacular set by Christine Jones…Green Day’s potent gift for irresistible tunes delivers the emotional contours of the story…their lushly melodic music is played with impressive raw power…American Idiot possesses a stimulating energy and a vision of wasted youth that holds us in its grip.”—New York Times
“Wildly entertaining…The music of Green Day practically blasts the lid off Berkeley Rep’s Roda Theatre. The cast and creative crew match the pulsating wall of sound for sheer energy and pump it up with Broadway-quality pipes, stage-rattling, thrashing choreography, flying bodies and walls crammed with pulsating video and projected images. Never has the Roda appeared more expansive yet bursting with images and action…The rock opera that opened Wednesday, in a world premiere with Broadway aspirations written all over it, packs plenty of excitement and entertainment into a remarkably theatrical rock concert…The lyrics are crystal clear as well. Every poetic twist and angry pun of Armstrong’s words comes through.”—San Francisco Chronicle
“Rock on! The much-anticipated Green Day musical delivers big-time…A collaboration between veteran Broadway director Michael Mayer and Billie Joe Armstrong, the Berkeley-bred punk trio’s frontman, the amped-up rock opera is now in its explosive world premiere…Intensely directed from start to finish, the relentless adrenaline rush of the piece makes its rare moments of quiet hit home that much harder…On the heels of Passing Strange, the last alternative-rock musical Berkeley Rep sent to Broadway, this production marks the troupe’s emergence as a major player in the development of hip, new musicals that harness the effervescence of pop culture.”—Bay Area News Group
“The cast, led by Tony-winner John Gallagher Jr., is phenomenal and the physicality they bring to the show and Steven Hoggett’s punk-esque choreography deserves a lot of praise. The sets, lighting, video and projection design are all amazing, creating a huge, urban jungle gym of concrete platforms, flat-screen TVs, and ad-plastered walls that keep every scene visually alive…This show is a sure-fire crowd pleaser—last night’s audience leapt to its feet twice.”—SFist.com
The San Francisco Examiner says American Idiot is “opening the world of theater to people who’ve not experienced its power before.”—San Francisco Examiner

"What marks [Sheridan] Smith out is her ability to suggest sky’s-the-limit enthusiasm and an earthbound quality; we can believe that, as well as seeking applause and approval, above all Fanny needs love." Dominic Cavendish for The Telegraph

"The show rests squarely on the shoulders of Sheridan Smith, who suggests that, as with Shakespeare’s Beatrice, a star danced at her nativity." Micheal Billington for The Guardian

"It is rare for such a transfer to be announced even before the show has opened but that’s Sheridan Smith’s box office appeal for you. And she deserves it, for she is all heart, this lady." Quentin Letts for The Daily Mail

"Early on, Fanny boasts that she has 36 expressions — better than all her theatrical rivals combined — but the elfin Smith has plenty more. Her voice is satisfyingly confident, yet what really distinguishes her is the searching, precise way she uses her eyes." Rob Dex for The Evening Standard

L'effet Sheridan Smith? Ce sera en tous cas son retour au Savoy Theatre quelques années après son triomphe dans "Legally Blonde"…
Presse : "But the jewel at the heart of this production is Smith...she belts her way through triumph and disaster with such full-hearted charm that you can only surrender to it." Jane Shilling for The Telegraph

Head Over Heels (2018-07-Hudson Theatre-Broadway)

Type de série: Original
Théâtre: Hudson Theatre (Broadway - Etats-Unis)
Durée : 5 mois 2 semaines
Nombre : 37 previews -
Première Preview : Saturday 23 June 2018

Dernière : Sunday 06 January 2019
Mise en scène : Michael Mayer
Chorégraphie :
Producteur :

Presse : "You would think that a sexually polymorphous musical that combines a Renaissance pastoral romance with the songs of the 1980s Califoria rock group The Go-Go's would at the very least be a hoot, a show that could get sloppy drunk on its own outrageousness. Yet Head Over Heels, which opened on Thursday night at the Hudson Theatre, feels as timid and awkward as the new kid on the first day of school. Make that the new kid who longs to run with the wild crowd but can’t quite commit to being as bad as coolness demands. Directed by Michael Mayer, who has been more than competent at the helm of Broadway rock musicals like American Idiot and Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Head Over Heels lacks the courage of its contradictions. It mutters deferentially when what you want is a rebel yell." Ben Brantley for New York Times

"Broadway traditionalists may not approve, but that feels like part of the point. Head Over Heels is a fantasy and celebration of nonconformity, and it puts its casting where its mouth is with an ensemble that is diverse in race, gender and size. Honoring the beat, in this merry Arcadia, means making room for different drummers." Adam Feldman for Time Out New York

"Back to the source, Sir Philip called his prose romance, a trifle. Indeed that's just what Head Over Heels is. And if that's your speed, you may just flip for it." Roma Torre for NY1

"If you have trouble imagining songs like "Vacation" and "Cool Jerk" fitting into a scenario depicting a royal family's romantic complications, you still will after seeing this relentlessly frothy musical, for which the term "check your brain at the door" could have been invented. The farcical, gender-fluid shenanigans are as campy as things get on Broadway. And that's saying something." Frank Scheck for Hollywood Reporter

"From the sets and costumes to the performance style, the basic principle seems to be: Less is boring and more is never enough. Thanks, no doubt, to the Oracle of Delphi (played here by the impishly funny Peppermint), it’s a miracle that at least some of the wit in Jeff Whitty’s original book gets through." Marilyn Stasio for Variety

Première : Tuesday 22 April 2014
Dernière : Saturday 13 June 2015
Mise en scène : Michael Mayer
Chorégraphie :
Producteur :
Avec : Neil Patrick Harris (Hedwig), Lena Hall (Yitzhak)
Commentaires : This production has seen a string of A-list actors done the wig and take on this challenging and highly demanding lead role, making it one of the most-talked about revivals out on Broadway right now!

Hedwig and the Angry Inch was first seen Off Off-Broadway at Westbeth, after which it ran at the Jane Street Theatre for over two years from early 1998. The groundbreaking Obie-winning Off-Broadway smash went on to win multiple awards for its cult film adaptation of the same name. This Broadway revival continues the trend, earning eight 2014 Tony Awards nominations and winning four, including Best Revival of a Musical and Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical for its glittering (literally) star, Neil Patrick Harris.
Presse : "Shamelessly enjoyable show. ... one of the few unqualified pleasures of this Broadway spring" Ben Brantley for New York Times

"Frisky, unapologetically raunchy fable of love, loss, fury and freedom is flashier on the Great White Way thanks to director Michael Mayer’s gleaming production." Joe Dziemianowicz for New York Daily News

"The success or failure of this 'Hedwig' rests on Harris. In cutoff denim shorts, teetering platforms and gigantic blond hair, he relentlessly prowls the stage, occasionally lunging into the audience for a lap dance or two. But it all feels a little too rehearsed, and Harris doesn’t look entirely comfortable clambering over the bombed-out set. Only when he finally clicks with the material — as on the heartbreaking “Wig in a Box,” about the process of becoming someone else — is the show suddenly worth the effort he’s poured into it." Elisabeth Vincentelli for New York Post

"Its downtown vibe wouldn't seem to make it a candidate for Broadway, but, under the spirited direction of Michael Mayer – and, pivotally, the grand performance by Harris – it's a blast." Robert Feldberg for The Record

"Neil Patrick Harris kicks it out like crazy as Hedwig, the transgender punk rocker who rages away in the musical “Hedwig and the Angry Inch.” Making his first Broadway appearance in ten years, Harris delivers a lusty, full-throttle performance " Michael Sommers for Newsroom Jersey

"Harris is beyond fabulous, holds nothing back and plays it any way but safe in Michael Mayer's exhilarating production." David Rooney for The Hollywood Reporter

"The screaming starts when a bespangled Neil Patrick Harris parachutes onstage in “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” and doesn’t stop until he’s back in his dressing room. That’s the kind of rock-star performance he gives in this spectacular revival." Marilyn Stasio for Variety

Commentaires : The left-wing polemicist, film maker, writer and agent provocateur is headed to Broadway for his first-ever stage show that he has written and to be starring in. It will be helmed by Spring Awakening's Tony-winning director Michael Mayer. Billed as "taking aim at Trump" by the New York Times, the show will be part-stand up, part play, part angry rant, and is set to raise the hackles of plenty a No.45 supporter. A limited engagement of just 12 weeks starting in July, Moore will perform his one-man show eight times a week, in what will be a headline-stealing engagement, and one that is guarantee to spark more than a few angry early morning tweets from the White House....

Commentaires : Based on the 1967 film screenplay by Richard Morris, the musical opened on Broadway in April 2002 and ran for 904 performances, winning six Tony Awards. The Broadway production team re-created the show in London, with Maureen Lipman and Marti Webb alternating as Mrs Meers. When Marti Webb left for the “Tell Me on a Sunday” tour, she was replaced with Anita Dobson. During the run Amanda Holden was taken ill, and her understudy Donna Steele took over the role to great acclaim. In spite of mostly good reviews the show failed to catch on with the public, and the show closed in June 2004, after an eight month run.
Commentaires longs: At the 2002 Tony Awards it collected the prize in six categories including Best Musical and Best Actress in a Musical. The creative team from the Broadway production, which includes designer David Gallow and director Michael Mayer, are reunited for the West End show.
